9 \8 b/ ?, Y4 P4 H+ ~$ O# _As we discussed, the hunman eye has three different types of color receptors that respond to three basic colors---red, green and blue or other colors are seem to combination for these different types of th receptors. Birds, howeveer, have receptors for these basic colors and for ultraviolet(紫外线的) or UV light. Thus they have much greater color range. What's really interesting though is the role that UV light plays in a bird's life. Scientists have discovered that thee bird's eye is extremely sensitive to ultraviolet light. In one experiment robins were able to distinguish between two objects: one completely unit and one lit(全部听的是light ) very dim ultraviolet light. even with the very dim UV light the object was very apparent to the robins . in another experiment female birds wax gold to two male birds. One was behind the filter transparent Uv light and one was behind the filter that blocked  UV light. The female bird prefers the male bird behind the transparent filter. Those birds' feather may have appeared colorful. Hunting birds use UV light to track(貌似只是上一篇也没有听准的一个 ) down small animals. This is possible because small animals use to mark urine to mark the trails and urine observed UV light. The hunting birds can use the UV light to follow the trail to their prey.5 y8 ~. Okay, class, as I mention the beginning of this semester, we will be taking a fieldtrip  to local marina and that fildtrip will take place next week. Um. before we go there are few things I like to ponit out to you. Particularly I like to talk about barnacles(一种北极的饿). As we discuessed a barnacle is a shell fish uaually small less than an inch length. It is related to lobsters, shrimps and crabs. However unlike those other shellfishes, barnacle are considered silent organisms. That is they are potentially damaging nuisance(损害). You know because they attach themselvs to wood piers, rocks and ship bottoms as we se next week in marina. And it even attach themselves to other living creatures such as turtles and whales. Now barnacles use a very powerful cement.(粘劳), it's a self made cement to attach themselves. In fact, it's one of the most powerful glues known. Paleontologist says even discovered fossils from hundreds fifteen million years ago. That have barnacles for food, people in Chile, Brazil, Spain and Italy harvest and eat the clam like GOOSE baracle. Un, however there are one type barnacle found here in the United States, on west coasts. They reach the weight of 3 pounds and actually grow up to five inches tall. It tastes a lot like lobster or crab

Birds are sometimes referred to as glorified reptiles  and even no modern birds ar structurally very different from reptiles. some show minor evidence from their ancestry like scales on their feet, or claws on their toes. However, flying repiles dis appeared more than 70 million years ago, but birds obviously managed to survive. You remember that the biological success on any group organism is measured by, the number of the species(总是听不出来 ), the individuals in the group, there are distribution up(分配) the world and of course their ability to adapt to all kinds of environmental condistions. On the basis of this criteria birds are considered one of the most successful vertebrates in modern times. Their success means that they were probably not only better adaptd in reptile for flying but also for life on land and on water. But when did these glorifications begin, and how fast the changes occur. It was seen logical to assume that at some time million years ago transitional stages between reptiles and the birds existed and in fact one of the most important clues(总是听不出) came with the discovery of the fossil called Archaeopteryx(始祖鸟"古代生物"), which literally means ancient bird.. The  Archaeopteryx dated back 150 million years to the Jurassic period(侏罗纪). fortunately the fossil not only included the skeleton but also impression of the feathers(总是听不出? of the wings and the double rare tail festhers. If it were not for these feathers scientists would classified it as a reptile, because they had many characteristics more like a lizard than a bird. Archaeopteryx is not, however, considered the ancestor of the modern bird. But it probably was derived from (源自于)the ancestor from and also gave rise to modern birds. Up until the mid 1980's the Archaeopteryx were considered the most ancient of all birds. Then in 1986, a fossil was discoverd called Protoavis(没查出意思,但是不会影响答题) that shows the nature of dinosaurs and bird-like characteristics. But it lived 225 million years ago, about 75 million years before the Araeopteryx so clearly the final world is not at in the original birds.
