- D1 g. d  i# b2 {8 A- I: W7 @I like to start today lecture by challenging some of the myths(又没有把应该听出来的听出来) about the certain animals consider to be perdators of human. Take a case of wolf. People fear wolf because the tales how wolves attack and eat people walk into the woods, in fact, if you encountered the wolvs in the wild, it probably runs away. Another animals run their accuse to harm peolpe is giant(巨大的) octopus. Story has been told about the terrifying giant octopus attacking and eating the entire ship. But like the crab or some such, you don't have much to fear for a giant octopus even the hungry one. One myth probably get by such stories concerns the size of octopus, biology report that on average it has an arm standard on 2 and half meters. Large certainly, but hardly ship eating size. far from being an attacker. The giant octopuses have numbers of talents that make it especially adapted escaping. It has no skeletal structure, so despite its large size it can squeeze to hole as small as centimeters wide and if it's caught, for example, in the mouth of the shark. It can pull away leaving one or more its arms. They will grow back or it has been pursued; It squirts black ink which some scientists believe that take on the form of another octopus and thus confuse the predator. And if that's not enough the giant octopus have the chameleon(变色龙) like ability to change the skin color to match its surrounding.

第十四篇(Animals behavior). G6 g" w/ F7 G( ~* |
As as way of illustrating our discussion of group behavior of animals, we are going to watch what I think is a fascinating videotape about the eland(大羚羊), one of two major species of antelopes(羚羊) in African. They live in herds up to 200 individuals. But first let's go over some of general advantages animals get from group association. Probably the most improtant advantage is defense against predators. Simply being in a large group decreases the chances  that any individual will be victim of  the predators. Cooperated defense further increases the chances of survivdual for individual and species. You'll see in the video that when the herds was attacked by the hyenas(土狼), the elands deliberately(故意地) drive their young into the center of a tightly passed group, the center being the safer than the periphery(外围). The herd acts in a way that increases the chances for survival of the off springs. Cooperated defense may even take the form of offense. Many species of small birds will join together in the groups to attack perdators like owls and hawks. Anther advantage to live in groups is the common sense notion that many eyes are better than a single pair. It is demonstrated(示范,证明) that large herds detect predators at greater distance than do individuals. Of course there is a down side to live a group also. But let's watch the video before we get into that.

宝贝加油~~~另外我觉得185每天总结两篇是不是进度有点慢,战线拖得长。考虑一下不每天总结185,可以隔天总结一次,每次总结四五篇。。。

Let's look another way the health agency to fight in parasite's diseases. One alternative to drugs and pesticides is to use biological agency. In other words, if the parasite cause problems, you find something that eats parasite itself or something that eat parasite normal host then you turn somrthing lose in the parasite habitat. For example, consider the Schistosomiasis(血吸虫病), schistosomiasis is the infection with parasite worm called Schistosome. Normally the host for these schistosome worm is the kind of fresh water (淡水)snail(蜗牛). But in the African country Kenya(肯尼亚) worms frequently infect humans who expose to (使受)water from ponds(池塘) where the snails live. this contact commonly occurs when people give their cattle water or wash their clothes in ponds. infected by 2 millions Kenya most children are infected. When inside to human host, the worm lays eggs and these can result in the internal bleeding, fever, fatigue (疲劳)and sometime death. There are still necessary of host so, because schistosome eggs can only hatch inside snail. If you already infected, you can take the drug to kill the worm but the drug is expensive and it's easy to get re-infected. when you g back to the ponds. Instead the researchers try to eliminate worm normal host,  the snail, by introducing Louisiana crayfishes into the ponds where the worms and snails lives. Now as you can see a crayfish looks something like miniature (缩小的模型)lobsters and it loves to eat snail. snail shell are rich in calcium which crayfishes eat for its own shell. And crayfish already abundant in nature Kenya river they were imported in very early 1970 and they are easy to find. So carysish could end up being chief perfect ways to reduce receive schistosomiasis. If they do though it would be the first time a biological agent has been successfull used to control a parasite.0 j6 }& @  L4 g3 t( h
