Listen to a talk given by a tour guide.; F% N8 m+ J8 {8 o6 I% z
Before starting our tour of M, I’d like to give you some historical facts that might help you appreciate what you see today or even more. M was a very much loved home of T before only fifty years. Jefferson who was of course president was also a great reader and language enthusiasts. He read widely on different subjects, including architecture. He wasn’t formally trained in architecture, but as a result of his study and observation of other buildings, he was able to help design and build the house. He chose the site himself, naming the estate M, which means little mountain in Italian. In fact, many of the ideas behind the design also came from the Italian architect UP, who lived in 16th century, and who had a great influence on the architect of England. J however ignored one of P’s principles. That is not to build in a high place. M’s elevation made the transportation of what was needed at the house, For example, food- especially difficult. And the view from the estate would not be spectacular if J had followed P’s advice. There really is no boundary between the house and nature around it. And so J was able to look out on his beloved estate Virginia from this wonderful vantage point. 5 h4 n0 J3 R, k. q% Y
Dozens of valuable painting of fresco was badly damaged today when rain water poured through a roof at the state museum. As freak rainstorm lashed in the central of the southern section of the state, part of the museum roof, which was scheduled to be repaired, collapsed, and water cascaded into two storm rooms. The museum director said that several well known pieces, including oil, watercolor and fresco, had been damaged. Although only one object, a nineteenth century’s fresco, was damaged beyond repair, she added that inspection for damages has not been completed, and therefore she could not estimate the cost of the repair and replacement.
