Currently，it is not rare to see that children, especially aged between 6 to 12, watch cartons in front of TV after school. Some people insist on that television programs with numerous violent and unhealthy contents exert an negative effect on the development of those children. The idea is strongly opposed by people who posses the idea that it is an excellent avenue to broaden their horizons into the world and stimulate their curiosities into a certain field where they may take a career for a life-long time. From my perspective, I totally agree with the latter idea.
No issue is more crucial now than the one that refers to extend their knowledge of a complex world. Nature programs, documentaries, educational programming can expose a variety of useful information. To give as a demonstration, among all the TV programs I value most is National Geography, telling stories ranging from zoology, botany to anthropology and psychology. Such various materials from all kinds of subjects comprehend me the mysteries of our living planet, say, how a nation formed step by step or skyscrapers with hundreds of floors in New York were constructed. Via utilizing the knowledge obtained from those programs to the science project in school, I received a high score than other students. Therefore, TV provides children with a platform to gain preciously unknown information, which is beneficial to their later future developments.
Cultivating children’s interests about the world is another chief and head reason I have chosen to put here. In the light of the motto of ’interest is the best teacher’, it is readily to cause children’s curiosities about something they never know before. As far as I am concerned, Thomas Edison, considered as one of the greatest scientists, liked to study then novelties, say, how a watch moved invariably day and night, from his childhood. As he himself said, the uncommon experience played a catalysis role in his later accomplishments of inventions, such as light bulbs or film projector. Thus, the importance of interests can not be neglected, considering that children prefer to explore the world incessantly and have a deep thought why the world is what it is now driven by the motivation-curiosity.
Although watching TV for a child has numerable advantages, it has its own demerits. However, it is time-consuming for children to watch cartoons for almost 2 to 3 hours, which slightly affects complement of their homework. In addition, radiation emitted from a TV set may damage children’s healthy. But so weak are these disadvantages that they can not be reasons to forbid children from watching TV.
