the government should require all young adults to perform some kind of national service, such as military service or social work In peaceful times, government always face the dilemma to decide whether all young adults should be required to perform some kind of national service, say, military service or not. This problem is the much debated one in that it affects everybody in their life plans. People may prefer one to another although some may have no opinions about it at all. Before rendering my opinion, I think it is necessary to take a glance at the arguments of both sides. It is quite easy for average people to choose not to go to national service for the simple reason that those seemingly dangerous and dull service does one no good but consumes lots of precious youth time. But at the mean time, although many may feel reluctant to accept those services, they fail to see the big picture. In fact, it is pretty reasonable and necessary for our government to perform this requirement among young adults. Here I would explain a few of the most important reasons. The main reason is that this service are actually a part of our responsibility of being an Chinese citizen, and every citizen has the responsibility to protect our country, although many of us today have just lost the awareness of it. To illustrate this, let's trace back to the 1930th of Chinese history and take a look at the Chinese anti-Japanese War. What makes us win the war is citizen awareness. Young Chinese adults in their 20s, are full of passion, they led the trend and soon became the pioneers of the force. Responsibility is only part of the important aspects, and another equally significant role of choosing those services lies in the fact that they can promote personal patriotism and country cohesion. Take South Korea for example, young adults are required to perform a one-year military service after graduating from high school and before going to universities. And thanks to this, the young Koreans now have a much stronger sense of belongingness to their country than ever before. You may easily notice this from the Asian Economic Crisis during the late 1990s. At that difficult period, citizens in Korea donate their money, gold necklace and other luxurious possessions to their country spontaneously and with that large sum of money, Korea finally manage to survive in the Crisis. Besides, the further reason why I advocate military services for the young is that the service exercises young adults' body as well as mind. It teaches valuable lessons and experiences that will guide the young through their late career life. It let the young cherish peace, cherish resources, cherish everything around us, and learn to be always gratitude towards life. As an old saying goes, it is the things in life we work hardest for, that we cherish the most. If all the factors above are considered, we will find out that the advantages of accepting military services outweigh rejecting it. Therefore from what we have discussed, we may safely come to the conclusion that choosing the service is a rather wise decision.
