Before starting out tour of Monticello,I'd like give you some historical(历史上的) facts that might help you appreciate(赏识,鉴赏) what you see today even more(更好).

$ P: K  g7 a& ]: X

Monticello was the very left much loved home of Thomas Jefferson for over 50 years.Jefferson, who was,of course,President, was also a great reader and language in enthusiast(爱好者).He read widely on different subject, including architecture. He was not formarly trained(培养) in architecture, but as a result of(作为结果) his study and observation(观察) of other buildings,he was able to help design and build the house. He chose the site(地点) himself, nameing in the state the estate(财产,不动产)"Monticello",Which means a "little mountain" in Italian. In fact, many of the ideas behind the design also came from the Italian architect Andrea Palladio.Who lived in the 16th century, and who had a great influence on(对..有影响) the architecture of England.

; K! H# O3 N9 j3 y

Jefferson, however, ignored(忽视) one of the Pallaido's principles-That is,not to build in a high place.Monticello's elevation made the transportation(运输) of what was needed at the house-for example food-espically difficult. But the view(风景) from this state the estate was not as e* would not be as spectacular(壮观的) if Jefferson had follow Palladio's advice;there really is no boundary(界限) between the house and the nature around it.and so Jefferson was able to look out on(面临) his beloved(心爱的) state of Virginia from this wonderful(令人惊奇的,极好的) vantage point(有利位置).

( }. E, q! H7 H2 S0 K; t

Now we'll go on to Jefferson's library.

Questions 39 through 43

Listen as a guide describe the ancient art of thatching a roof(用茅草盖屋顶).

Welcome to the Four Winds Historical Farm, where traditions of the past are preserved(保持) for visitors like you.Today, our master(熟练的) thatchers(茅屋匠) will begin giving the farm this barn(谷仓) behind me as dirty f* a sturdy(牢固的) thatched roof able to withstand(抵挡) heavy winds and last up to(持续) a hundred years. How do they do it?Well,in a nutshell(简单地),thatching involves(包括) covering the beams(梁) of or rafters(椽)-The wooden skeleton(框架) at a roof-with reeds(芦苇) or straw(稻草).Our thatchers here have harvested(收获,收割) there their own natural meterial for the job-the bundles(捆) is the of water reeds you see line lying(平放) over there(那边) beside the barn.

Thatching(茅草屋) is certainly(的确) uncommon in Unite State today.I guess that's why so many of you have come to see this demonstration(示范,实例).But it wasn't always that way(情形).In the 17th century, the colonists(殖民者) here thatched their roofs with reeds and straw, just as(正像) say a they had done in England. After a while(不久),though, they began to replace the thatch with wooden shingles(屋顶板) because wood was so plentiful(大量,丰富).And eventually, other roofing meterials like stone, slate(板岩),and clay tiles(粘土瓦管) come to use.

It's a real shame(遗憾,可惜) that most people today don't realize how strong and long lasting(持久的) a thatched roof is.In Ireland, where thatching is still practised(使用的),the roofs can survive winds of up to(超过) one hundred ten miles per hour. That's because straw and reeds are so flexible(柔韧).They bend(弯曲) or but don't break(折断) in the wind like other meterials can.Another advantage is that the roofs keep the house cool in the summer and warm in the winter. And then(于是,然后),of course, there's the roofs' longevity(使用寿命)-the average is 60 years, but they can last up to a hundred.Without all these reasons to start thatching roofs again, wouldn't there it be wonderful(令人愉快的) to see this disappearing craft(手艺) return to(恢复) popularity(普遍,流行)?

Questions 44 through 46.

Listen to a radio news story.

A lot of people in the Unite States are coffee drinkers.Over the last few years,a trend(趋势) have been developing to introduce(传入,带来) premium(额外费用,额外收入),specially blended coffees(混合咖啡)-knows as "gourmet(美食家) coffees" into the American market.

Boston seems to have been the birthplace(诞生地) of the trend. In fact, major groupmake gourmet coffee merchants(商人) form other cities like Seattle and San francisco came to Boston, where today there they're engaged in(参加) a kind of "coffee war" with Boston's merchants. There They are all competing for(为...而竞争) a significant(重大的,重要的) share(分配) of the groupmake gourmet coffee market.

Surprisingly, the competition(竞争) among these leading groupmake gourmet coffee businesses(公司) will not heard hurt of any of them.Experts predict that the groupmake gourmet market in the Unite States is growing and will continue to grow,to the point that groupmake gourmet coffee will soon capture(夺取,获得) a half of what is now of 1.5-million-dollar market, and will be an 8-million-dollar market by 1999.

Studies have shown that coffee drinkers who convert(转变) to groupmake gourmet coffee seldom go back to the regular(习惯性的,固定不变的) brands(商标) found(建立) in Supermarkets. As a result(结果),these brands will be the real losers in the groupmake gourmet coffee competition.

Questions 40 through 43.

Listen to a stutent report in the United Stated history class.

So..as Jim said,James Polk was the 11th president(总统),and..uh..were Wellm* porks my report's about the next president-Zachary Taylor.

Taylor was selected elected(选举) in 1849.It's surprising because...were well,he was the first president that didn't have any previous(先前的) political experience(政治经历).The main reason he was chosen as a candidate was because he was a war hero.

In the army, his men called him "old Rough and Ready(马马虎虎的,简陋的)".I guess because of his r* egis "rough edges(不修边幅)".He was a kind of blunt(坦诚的,直率的) any and he didn't really look like a military(军事的) hero.He liked to do things like wear civilian(平民) clothes and instead of the a uniform(制服)-even in battle. And he was so short and p* be h* the limited up upon plump(圆胖的) he had to be lifted up(举起) onto his horse. But he did win a lot of the battles and he became more and more popular. The So,the weak Whig party(辉格党) decided to nominate(提名) him for the presidency(任期),even though(即使) no one knew anything about where he stood(立场) on the issues.

I couldn't find much about its his accomplishments(成就)-probably because he was only in office about a year and half before he dead. But one thing-he pushed for(努力争取) the development of the transcontinental(横贯大陆的) railroad because he thought it was important to form a link(形成连接) with the West Coast(西海岸)-There was a lot of wealth(财富) in California and Oregon(俄勒冈州) from commerce(商业) and minerals(矿物) and stuff(原料).Also,he was established(建立) an agricultural of b* bureau(局) and a in the Department of the Interior(内务部) and promoted(促使) more government aid(援助) to agriculture.

Well,that's about all I found.Like I said,he died in office-in 1850-so it's his vice president(副总统) took over(接任)...and that's the next report.So...thank you!
