Agree or disagree ? It is better to learn broad subjects or specialize in a special subject
To my way of thinking, whether to learn broad subjects or specialize in a special subject depends on the growth stage of your life. Before we graduate from university and begin our career or go to graduate schools, we should approach to learn as broadly as we can, which will expose us to a lot of benefits. Here are some reasons.
To begin with, learning broad subjects will be a primary and indispensable preparation for further education throughout our entire life. From the day we entered kindergarten, we have already been led to a wide range of knowledge. We learn music, dancing, handcraft and so on. Although all of these may seem like have nothing to do with our later formal education, they did build up children's curiosity about discovering and exploring the world. In addition, some knowledge or skills we learn from kindergarten or primary school are actually essential to our life and study, but we cannot obtain all of these knowledge from a single subject. For example, in language classes, we learn how to read and write; in mathematics class we learn how to calculate; in art class we learn the history of art and how to appreciate music and paints. But how can we learn all these above solely from a special subject?
Next, through the variety of subjects, students will be able to get touch to different kinds of teachers and classmates, which may broaden their vision and stimulate more creative thinking. For example, a physics teacher will teach you characteristics of atom from his or her perspectives, which maybe focus more on physical theory, while a chemistry teacher will guide you to another way of studying the same substance. If Madam Curie just specialized in either chemistry or physics, how could she accomplish such outstanding scientific achievements? So it is with different types of classmates. Classmates with diverse academic background may mutually bring new ideas to each other via discussions at -or after- classes.
Another point worth mentioning is that, students need broad subjects as methods to measure their talents or shortages in various fields. They will figure out what they are really interested in and which type of career will be the most suitable for them. After taking a broad range of courses offered by different schools or colleges in my university, I eventually find out that I love finance so much that it would be my best choice for future career.
However, after we graduate from university, there will be a new beginning and a new stage of life comes. At this brand new start, we should try to concentrate more on some special subject, which has already been chosen as our professional object. Since that we've already accumulate enough basic knowledge, specialization will more probably contribute to our success in a particular field.
In short, those who learn broad subjects prior to graduation from university is wise, but when they begin to work or enter a graduate school, specialization should be encouraged.
