We have been looking at the factors leading out(up) to the American Revolution. Today I want to look more deeply into what the colonists in the 1700 were thinking and feeling. people rights, rights that they were born with and which couldn't be taken away by any human being. Unlike(unless) of course someone commit to(the) crime, and then they have to go through the proper legal steps. But too often, it seems to meet we private determine the(apply the term) invention only the(to) big and important items like the car or the telephone. After all, we can now hardly imagine surviving without them. We don't stop to think that there are literally hundreds of inventions that make our life a little lazier(easier), a little more convenient. Let's take something is commomest, (as common as) the paper bag on my desk here, yes, that’s right, I've got my lunch in it. Well, I never open my lunch bag without thinking of Chill Stevil(Charles Stilwell) who was in 1883 to invented the first machine to produce bags like this. You see, before Stilwell, bags were paced(pasted) together by hand and they didn't have flat bottoms so they couldn't stand on their own, and they(you) couldn't fall(fold折叠) them very well either. Stilwell changed of(all) that was(with) what is really a mabled(marvelous不可思议的) piece of engineering. Think about it, look at how efficiently this bag is designed. I can open it with a flick轻打 of my reft(wrest 力量), but I can also fold the bag (it back) flat as apiece of paper and I can store a hundred of them under my desk. What's more, it is strong, see, I can even put this heavy dictionary in it, and it won't break. But it's cheap to produce; really it's a master piece(masterpiece 杰作) of practical engineering. W：I was talking before the break about funding an(in) art in the United States, about where the money comes from, I think some of you probably have some questions, yes Tom?

M: You said that during the depression, the governments provide a belief(relief work) to a lot of the artists, just what sort of works did they do.

W: It depended on the kind of artists you talking about, a lot of painters did work for government buildings, mirrors(murals 壁画) and city halls or other public buildings for example. Scoters(Sculptors 雕刻家) did work in putting(to put in) public park, that's all (that sort) of the things.

M: Didn't people get upset about government spending so much money on art?

W: There were some critic I'm(criticisms) sure. Many people considered the program wasteful. they thought that creating a public art was not real work, like paving a road or putting up a building. But the government was concerned with getting as many people employed as possible

M: Could I ask about one more thing? I expected that art from 1930’s to be in stressed(abstract), but what you showed in the slides was pretty realistic.

W: You maybe a little mistaken(mixed up) there. Abstract Expressionism that the name(main) of American abstract school, it usually associated with 1950.

M：Was there a document(dominant) artist style that these depression era历史时期 artists used?

W: Let's look at a few more slides. Maybe that will show you. Also, there was an exhibition in Washington a few years ago about this art, so I put a catalog from the show I(on) reserve in the library, if any of you want to see more examples about this work, go over and take a look.

W: I'm reading this book about jazz so I quote some(for that course on) popular culture I'm taking. Listen to these quotes by Louis Amostrong, when someone asked him what jazz music was, he said: if you get an(getta) ask, you'd(will) never know. What do you think about that?

M: Oh, I don't think jazz was that serious(mysterious). I mean it’s just some(another) kind of music. Thinks(Seems)( }- w. R  Z, V" Q
to me like a person used to(not) be able to study it to break down into pieces. I took the classic musical appreciation course lest semester and the professor told(taught) us the kinds of things to listen for, to understand the music. I doubt if(don’t see why) I couldn't do the same things for jazz of(as) I learnt to do for classic music.

W: Well, from what this book said, a lot of people try to apply rules of the western musical theory for(to) jazz music, like the rules he probably learnt, but(that) you need to appreciate that jazz is according to its own style(set) of rules. Unlising(Analyzing) jazz but(by the) same rules as classic music would be like using the woof(rule) for unlike(analyzing) a short story to unlike(analyzing) a poem.

M: Oh, come on, it's obvious that poem has a different structure from the short story, but just how in(is) jazz so different?

W: Ok, well, one of the examples is the beat

In European music, the ground beat is built into the melody to mean(the main) sound line, you can tap your foot to it, but in jazz, the ground beat is literally(deliberately故意的) avoided in the melody. The beat is used to be as f(has to be established) by the whole separated section of instruments like bass or drum.

M: All right, I'll give you that, rhythm(Really it) is a pretty important difference, but is that all?

W: No, there are other differences. Like, traditionally, classic music is based on certain types of music scales, major and minor. Virtually(Fortunately我觉得这个我是对的~~) all of this music is built around differences and changes the new(these) style of skills(types of scales). But a lot of jazz is based on the blues and blues skill(scales) isn't major or minor.
