Now, I hope you all of followed my advice and work comfortable shoes because , as I said today we are going to do a little field study. To get started let me describe a couple对, 双of the broadleaf trees we have in front of us . I’m sure you’ve all noticed this big tree next to Brant Hall . It’s a black walnut that must be 80 feet tall. As a matter fact, there is a plaque匾, 名牌, 饰板identifying识别, 鉴定it as the taller black woman in the State. And from here we can see the beautiful archway拱门, 拱道of trees at the commons. They’re American elms榆树… . The ones along the commons were planted when the colleges was founded 120 years ago. They have the distinctive dark green leaves that look lopsided倾向一方的, 不平衡的because the two sides of the leaf are unequal不平等的, 不平衡的, 不同的. I want you to notice the elm right outside Jackson Hall. Some of its leaves have withered枯萎的; 憔悴的; 凋谢的and turned yellow. Maybe due to Dutch elm disease疾病; 弊病only a few branches树枝seem affected受到影响的; 受到打动的so far , but if this tree is sick, it’ll have to be cut down , well let’s move on another describe what we see as we go.
