Before we start our first lab, I’d like to tell you a little bit about the workbook we’ll be using. The first thing I’d like to point out is that the workbook contains a very large amount of material---far more than you could ever handle in a single semester .What you’re suppose to do is choose the experiments and activities that you ant to do---within a certain framework, of course .Part of my job is to help you make your choices. Next , I’d like to mention that in each workbook chapter ,there are usually two subsection. The first is called “Experiments” and the second is called “Activities”. In the “Experiments” section , the workbook gives full instructions for all the experiments ,including alternate procedures. Choose the procedure you wish---there’re plenty of equipment available. In the “Activities” section , you will find suggestion for projects that you can do on your own time .You’ll see that there are usually no detailed instruction for the activities ---you’re suppose to do them your own way.

Jefferson who was , of course President , was also a great reader and language enthusiast 热心家, 热情者, 热衷者..He read widely on different subjects .including architecture . He wasn’t formally trained in architecture ,but as a result of his study and observation of other building ,he was able to help design and built the house .He choose the site himself ,naming the estate 房地产, 产业; 财产, 遗产“Monticello” , which means “little mountain” in Italian .In the fact, many of the ideas behind the design also came from the  Italian architect Andrea Palladio, who lived in the 16 century and who had a great influence on the architecture of England . Jefferson , however ,ignored 忽视, 不理睬; 抹煞(建议) one of Palladio’s principles 原理, 原则---that is ,not to build in a high place. Monticello’s elevation上升, 举起 made the transportation of what was needed an the house ---for example , food ---especially difficult .But the view from the estate would not be as spectacular引人注目的; 壮观的 if Jefferson had followed Palladio’s advice ;there really is no boundary 界线; 边界; 境界; 范围 between the house and the nature around it ,and so Jefferson was able to look out on his beloved state of Virginia from his wonderful vantage 优势;优势地位 point .4 T0 D# O' S& |

Thatching is certainly uncommon in the United States today .I guess that’s why so many of you have come to see this demonstration
表示, 表明.But it wasn’t always that way .In the 17 century, the colonists殖民者; 移住民; 殖民地居民here thatched their roofs with reeds and straw, just as they had done in England. After a while , though , they began to replace the thatch with wooden shingles because wood was so plentiful. And eventually最后, other roofing materials like stone ,slate板岩([](在报刊上)抨击, 谴责), and clay粘土, 白土, 泥土tiles【建】瓦, 瓷砖, , (软木, 橡胶等制的)弹性地砖, 贴砖came into use.

It’s a really shame羞愧; 耻辱; 廉耻心that most people today don’t realize how strong and long lasting a thatched roof is . In Ireland ,where thatching is still practiced ,the roofs can survive winds of up to one hundred ten miles per hour. That’s because straw and reeds are so flexible易弯的, 挠性的, 有弹性的.They bend弄弯, 使弯曲but don’t break in the wind like other materials can. Another advantage is that the roofs keep the house cool in the summer and warm in the winter. And ,then, of course ,there’s the roofs’ longevity长寿---the average is 60 years, but they can last up a hundred .With all these reason to start thatching roofs again , wouldn’t it be wonderful to see this disappearing craft手工艺品return to popularity?; ]! j$ r  ?  `  q' m. \
