began an orthodontic treatment program with Dr. Junni Wang to correct a sev

, I9 F( j6 k) M* F; i! c' P# Ywas a most reluctant participant; not many teenagers look forward to braces

different. However, at every monthly check-up for three-and-a-half years th

, k3 |( |- I$ @ally increased my involvement in the field to determine if dentistry really k+ Q& o, w1 b3 H. f% B8 v
was for me. My participation with the UBC Pre-Dental Society allowed me to c # @9 b. _/ r. F% j
ommunicate with various professionals in the field. I also investigated oppo
: W7 Q% _3 z8 k" g. U$ H3 }rtunities to volunteer in the University Dental Clinic or participate in res * ?* u, f9 B3 |# `3 ~
earch work. After speaking to a couple of professors in the UBC Faculty of D , C$ ~5 @ b, r: g$ A" M2 q
entistry asking them about research opportunities, I found a topic that inte ( y: d' e' {! [' `
rested me. Dr. Putnins, of the Division of Periodontics, offered me a positi
/ P, G$ U, A) C( H+ {on in his lab to conduct a semi-quantitative analysis to determine the level

counted as 3.0 credits towards my undergraduate degree. Because the vast ma
3 _! L* _0 v/ X4 H' T+ wjority of my work was self-directed, I submitted my findings for evaluation
0 s% e; H- N6 i( ~% N& ]by the faculty in a 32-page report with 46 references, and I also defended m
% Q* L; |) b, N k( C* Ly methods before a panel of professors. Impressed by the findings and result " D5 D8 M$ i [8 N
