"The most effective way to understand contemporary culture is to analyze the trends of its youth."
Is analyzing the culture trend of its youth the most effective way to understand contemporary culture? Different people have different answers due to their respective point of view. Some believe that such analysis is efficient, while others hold the viewpoint that analyzing of the traditional and conventional culture trend is necessary. As far as I concern, the aim of understanding contemporary culture call for a balance between them.
Firstly, youth is the pioneer of the country, in which sense they mirrors the development of the country. They can reflect a great number of aspects of social advancement in which culture development compose an important part. Since youth have the vigoroso receptivity in term of new culture trend, they can easily become the culture symbol. Simply we can draw a country’s culture trend by observation its youth. For example we may know the most popular songs by checking the youth’s IPOD; we may know which book is most favorable by looking at youth’s bookshelf; we may know the new fashions by seeing what youth wear on the street. All this culture factors can be observed from the youth who represent this country’s culture trend.
Secondly, although youth are young, fresh and immature, they have the passion and courage to create their culture in the areas of music, art, movie and literature. So many wonderful music are produced by young singers; so many excellent paintings are drawn by young painters; so many surprising movies are directed by young directors; so many valued literatures are created by young writers. All these accomplishments done by young people conflux the new trend of contemporary culture. Also, for instance, more and more young people take part in talent show like “American idol” in which they can achieve their own worth. It has become a popular culture in nowadays and in some sense the young people are promoting such culture trend.
Admittedly, since the youth is only a fraction of the whole society, studying them and their culture just provide us one perspective of the whole culture. Traditional and conventional culture, compare to those of the youth, constitute the foundation of the contemporary culture. The culture of youth is more like a kind of avant-courier culture which can be traceable from the traditional culture. The relationship between them is alike the pedestal and the superstructure of a building. If we want to evaluate its aesthetic value, we should take both parts into account but not only a single one.
To sum up, due to analysis and reasons mentioned above, which sometimes correlate with each other to generate an integrate whole and thus become more convincing than any single one of them, we may safely arrive the conclusion that when understanding a country’s contemporary culture people should consider both trends of youth culture and traditional culture since they are equally important.
