2. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Parents are the best teachers. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
Are parents the best teachers?
Some people think that parents are the best teachers while others disagree.
I couldn’t agree with either group of people. In my opinion, not all the parents’ are the best teachers.
Parents give us much knowledge. Alexander, perhaps the greatest military leader of all time, provides a perfect example contradicting the statement that parents are the best teachers for their children. In Alexander’s case, Aristotle, the great philosopher and scientist and Alexander’s tutor and provided him the best education he could ever have, was his best teacher. Aristotle gave Alexander a thorough training in rhetoric and literature and stimulated his interest in science, medicine, and philosophy. And it was recorded that Aristotle gave Alexander a copy of the Iliad, which he always kept with him and read frequently. Without the tremendous impacts on Alexander by Aristotle, Alexander could never grow up to a great man he was.
Parents understand us the most, so the suggestions and opinions that they give us are pertinent. Take Hannibal for example. Hannibal is the greatest Carthaginian military leader known for his exceptional bravery and military genius. He received an exceptional education from his parents. His father, a great military leader of Carthage, made little Hannibal to knee down before altering and swearing he would never be a friend of Rome, the biggest enemy of Carthage. Hannibal said: “I will use fire and steel to arrest the destiny of Rome.” This laid the foundation for Hannibal’s life-long aim: safeguard his country, Carthage, and destroy its biggest rival, Rome. His father took Hannibal, 9 year old, with him, even when he was fighting a battle. The training Hannibal received from his father turned Hannibal a strong man and a military genius.
However, some parents are utterly ignorant to teach their children, although they are very goodness. The story of Abraham Lincoln, 16th president of the United States and one of the greatest statesmen of the world, is a case in point. Lincoln grew up in a destitute family in Kentucky. His father and stepmother, absorbed in daily toils, almost couldn’t teach him anything except for clearing forests. However, little Lincoln seemed to have a natural desire for books and knowledge. Because books were scare in the frontier, Lincoln managed to borrow books from various sources and would read them by the light of fire in his father’s cabin. Lincoln’s extraordinary ability of self-education prepared himself for a successful political career later.
All in all, not all parents are the best teachers. Some of parents can give children much knowledge and became the best teacher, but others neglect bringing up their children.
