18. What are some important qualities of a good supervisor (boss)? Use specific details and examples to explain why these qualities are important.
Chairman Mao, one of the greatest statesmen China has even seen, commented, “Anything is possible if you really put your heart and soul in it.” And people always ask, “What is the essential quality of a good boss?” After giving it some serious thought, I would have to say leadership and generosity.
For starters, a good supervisor should have leadership. Leadership is deciding the company whether survive or perish. Take Steven Jobs for example. Steven Jobs, American computer-----and cofounder of Apple Computer, developed a keen interest in computers in high school and attended lectures at Hewlett-Packard after school. In 1985,Steven Jobs left Apple, took five of its employees with him, and founded a new company to build more advanced computers. But several years later, the Apple Company was confronted with grave product and market problem. Asked by the board to come back and turn the company around. Jobs agreed. He became the CEO of Apple Computer with an annual salary of 1 dollar. After took control, Jobs took various measure and developed several products, which hit it big in the US and world markets. Apple Computer’s revenues increased exponentially as a result.
Furthermore, generosity is also important quality to a good boss. Do you know Alexander, who is a distinguished ancient person in history? Alexander the Great, perhaps the greatest military leader of all time, is a man of extraordinary bravery, brilliant military genius, exceptional generosity, and remarkable benevolence. After his father was killer, Alexander, only 20, became the king of Macedonia. He faced a multitude of challenges: domestic opponents challenged his position and many Greek cities saw the death of his father as an opportunity to gain independence. Before embarked on the military campaigns to conquer the Persians, Alexander gave all his properties to others. One of his generals asked, “You gave up all your fortune, but what do you keep?” “Hope,” Alexander answered. “I only keep hope, because it will bring me infinite fortune.” instilled enormous confidence and inspired tremendous royalty in his followers.
To put in a nutshell, leadership and generosity are the two most qualities a boss must to have if s/he is to become good supervisor in life. I think we should bear in mind a sentence and can often ask yourself: “Do you want to spend the rest of your life selling sugared water or do you want the chance to exchange the world? ”
