71. Some people think that the automobile has improved modern life. Others think that the automobile has caused serious problems. What is your opinion?
I once read in the Times that automobiles rank as one of the greatest human innovation of all time. Since their invention at the turn of the 20th century, automobiles have become an indispensable part of modern live and profoundly changed the modern society and the environment. The way I see it, despite the benefits and conveniences brought by automobiles, they have tremendous negative impacts on our lives and the environment. Automobiles emit a wide variety of pollutants, which cause serious problem, such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides.
For starters, carbon monoxide gravely endangers people’s health, giving rise to various diseases and resulting in death.
Furthermore, carbon dioxide contributes to the global warming. The increased amounts of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will increase the ability of the air to keep the Sun’s heat. As a result, the global temperatures will rise and lead to the melting of the polar ice and a rise in sea levels. Consequently, large parts of the Earth will be flooded by seawater.
In addition, nitrogen oxides result in acid rain, which can also damage the environment we are living in. Acid rain severely damages the local ecosystem, leading to the death of water plants and fish. Otherwise, historical buildings, for instance, the Forbidden City and Great Wall in China, have been damaged by acid rain. Most important, acid rain can endanger people’s health leading to various diseases.
Finally, particles jeopardize people’s health, giving rise to a wide variety of respiratory diseases, such as asthma.
All in all, automobile has lead to various problems, such as global warming, the acid rain, and endangering people’s health. These problems have inflicted heavy damages on the environment. If human beings fail to take the negative effects of their activity making use of automobile and take effective measures to resolve these problems, their survival will be at risk.
