Whatever you write, readers will be seeking to get a sense of you as a person and as a potential student and graduate of Harvard Law School. In this context, it is generally more helpful to write what you think readers should know to have a better sense of who you are rather than writing what you think the readers want to read.' 　　The Personal Statement can be an opportunity to illuminate your intellectual background and interests, or to provide information about yourself and your achievements that may not be fully evident through other information provided in the application. In many ways, you are preparing a case. As in most legal cases, it is important to be persuasive, clear, succinct, and timely. There are few substitutes for careful forethought and planning in this process.
　　We understand that it can be difficult to discuss oneself on paper, but our experience is that written statements are valuable in the selection process. Candid, forthright and thoughtful statements are always the most helpful.

　　While on-line applications are becoming more common, most graduate schools still require you to apply directly to them in hard copy. Assembling all of the materials required to support your application takes time and organization. Allow a minimum of one month just to assemble the materials you will need -- some graduate schools receive in excess of 100,000 applications annually, managed by a graduate admissions office. These offices require plenty of notice if you are to receive the necessary forms in time. Keep a written record of each aspect of the application process you need to complete for every school to which you apply, paying special attention to deadlines. 　　There are five major elements considered in an application:
　　Personal Statement -- This is critically important. You must articulate your preparation, motivation, and goals. The prime aspects to cover are: 个人陈述

　　Why you want to pursue this particular degree and how it fits into your career plans

　　Why you have selected this particular institution (be specific!)
　　Where you see this taking you in the long term
　　Grade Point Average -- Obviously, this needs to be as high as possible. If you have had a particular problem which has impacted your grades, you may wish to make brief reference in your statement. If you do so, explain the matter- do not whine! GPA- i. L3 h) K& ?( l1 _
　　Transcript -- Institutions want to know how good your preparation in the field is and that you have taken a variety of challenging courses and not "the easy way out." Most schools require official transcripts -- those sent directly from the registrar (i.e., NOT the academic record which your residential dean can provide). 　　Standardized Test Scores -- Again, you want to do as well as possible. Most schools require some form of standardized test -- check each department's requirements as these vary greatly. A variety of study guides (both books and software) containing old tests are available in most bookstores and on-line. Remember, however, that it is the total package of information that is being reviewed, not one element.
