Today we’ll examine the roll that private transportation---namely the automobile---plays in city planning. A number of the sociologists blame the automobile for the decline of the downtown areas of the major cities. In 1950’s to 1960’s, the automobile make it possible to work in the city and yet live in the suburbs many miles away. Shopping patent changes. Instead of patronizing(vt. 惠顾,保护, 支援, 赞助, 庇护)downtown stores(n. (英)百货商店), people live in the suburbs went to large shopping mall outside the city and closer to home. Merchants in the city failed, and their stores closed, downtown shopping areas became deserted. In recent years there’s been a rebirth of the downtown areas, as many suburbanites(n. 郊区居民) have moved back to the city. They’ve done this of course to avoid the highways clogged with commuters from the suburbs.' }+ e: ^: P' X1 t( ?
I’ve chosen this particular city planning problem---our dependence on private transportation--- to discuss in groups. I hope you all can make up some elevate solutions. Oh, and, don’t approach the problem to the purely sociological problem, and try to take into account environmental and economic issues as well.

Before our tour, I’d like to give some background information about the painter, Grant Wood, we will be seeing much of his work today. * N1 g: i  h4 m
Woods was born in 1881 of an Iowa farm country, and became his interesting in art very early in life. Although he studied art in both Minneapolis(明尼阿波利斯(美国城市)) and at the Art Institute of Chicago, the strongest influences on his art were European(欧洲人). He spent time in both Germany and French, and he study there helped shape his own stylized form of realism.

And as he remember from his child to around the tunnel of Century, His portraits of farm families imitate the static formalism of photographs of early settlers(n. 移民者)posed in front of there homes.
3 A2 h5 z  R7 EHis painting of farmers at work, and of their tools and animals, demonstrate a serious  respect for the life of Midwestern United States. By the 1930’s, Wood was a leading figure of the school of art called “American regionalism.”

It has recently been announced that a new high school will be built in our community. The advantage or disadvantage of the school has been brought to our neighborhood attention. Those who object to the high school argue that it would bring more and more people to convene here. They believe that it will result the coming traffic jam. But people who advocate establishing the outstanding high school, on the contrary, maintain that the school will provide to their children a good educational environment. I’d like to have a new high school in a long run for the following reasons.
9 ~/ B# z6 i" n+ w! p, [' K8 F4 x1 Z0 ~7 \
To begin with,our community consist of other facilities like a university and a hospital, but lacks of  a high school. Establishing a high school provide more education opportunity for the children who is living around it. No one can deny the fact that a person's education is the most important aspect of his or her life. It is convenient for the student who will studied in the school that in both commuting and safety. The shorter time the students spend in transferring from home to school, the more attention they will pay in their study. Of course, they will obtain more knowledge consequently. On the other hand, the condition of our traffic leaves much to be desired. Moreover, no one can doubt the short distant is good for the student safety.
2 O; k5 @1 W2 |2 ~6 q. u3 }7 I) j5 z4 I: |, K
What's more, it benefits for relieve burden of parents. Now, it is common that parents have to put the children to school on account of children’s safety under today’s traffic condition. The school close to our home can save parents a great deal of time on the way between home and school everyday, so they would be able to relax themselves through physical exercise and concentrate more time and energy on their daily work.
2 O3 f3 d) r2 K" Q( X. @! O2 d% ~
' h) J3 h4 ?2 Y7 y$ H( rIn addition, building a high school will produce positive effects on economic growth. Running a high school need all kinds of teachers in different fields and assistants who renders the daily service of the school. It offers lots of job opportunities to our neighbor and changes the economic condition of the employee. And the school will educate a great deal of elite who will be the pulse of the prosperity of our society.
$ K3 [! E( W1 Q. r% e6 ]  @* r8 ^: l/ k
Without a doubt, every coin has its two sides. A high school standing in our community will lead to a series of negative effects on our life, for instants, traffic jam and energy crisis. But the advantages of a high school outweigh the disadvantages of it. From what has been discussed above, we may safely draw that it is better for building a high school in our community.
