Though his quotation provided us with a vivid description about his concern with destructive forces brought with progress of modern technologies, there are still no less people claiming that the technology, compared with its negative effects, did have made the world a better place to live. For my part, I can not agree with the latter opinion.
First of all, a basic reason for which we keep pushing forward the development of technology is that a higher life standard has been being pursued by us human beings. In order to meet our endless needs for gorgeous houses, luxurious cars and delicious food, various environment problems have been caused. For example, modern industries, transportation, and even daily life in apartments have to rely on fossil fuels as a major energy source. However, the acquirement for energy from those fossil fuels can be always accompanied with harmful exhausted emission, among of which two chemicals, carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide, are particularly notable for their destructive effects. The increased amounts of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere have led to global warming, one of the most serious problem the world has ever been faced with. For the latter, sulfur dioxide, it is considered as a determining factor resulting in some other environmental problems like acid rain, which can not only directly inflict damage onto creatures and architectures, but also further aggravate deforestation and desertification.
Other than environment problem visible in real world, we should also notice the problems now pervasively existing in our virtual world, the Internet, a cyber space which was exclusively created by modern information technology. For instance, computer virus, a malicious computer program that can spread over the Internet or other media and infect the computer it intruded, can engender disastrous impacts on data saved in target computer. It may delete or change files, steal secret information, load and run undesirable applications, and even result in system paralysis.
All in all, though admitting the benefits modern technologies has brought us did make our lives more convenient and comfortable, we should also pay greater attention to those negative consequences. Modern industries are not supposed to destroy our homeland; Information highway should not be used as new venue when criminals get tired with being chased by enforcers in real world. In my view, our government and other parties concerned must take more feasible and forceful measures to eliminate those malicious influences, and every individual should as well make his own effort to prevent our application of technology to lives from derailing.
