Now you have reading articles about the tremendous damage done to life and property by earthquakes   that’s why seismologists have been working so hard to develop methods of earthquake prediction  we can now predict earthquake fairly well but the predictions only locate potential areas of danger  they don’t predict the specific time and location at which earthquake is likely to occur  today I want to introduce three prediction models that have been developed  & {3 g1 ]8 L' C
The first prediction models looks along earthquake fawlts  those cracks in the earth’s crust  to find what are known as seismic gaps   seismic gaps are places where the fault has shown little or no seismic activity for a long time  this theory postulate that such places are due for a major shock
) Y4 V# ?: s9 R7 |8 ?0 I8 b8 @The second model relies on phenomena  like ground flit using long cylindrical tubes containing water observers noted that ground tilt tended to occur before major earthquakes  that led them to correctly predict the big haicheng earthquake of 1975 before successful eq prediction  scientists ever maked   a million people were evacuated from that chinese city  before  the eq struck  unfortunately this method hasn’t worked consistently so we can’t say it’s been perfected4 C. a# q, h0 y' g* Y+ g1 {( `: ]  p
The third model is based on the theory that major earthquakes closely follow a series of minor ones  starting with measurements and timing of the smaller earthquakes  a complex formula calculates the times of increased probability of a much larger quake

- G; i8 _5 y8 W3 i5 x
For the moment none of these model can predict with reasonable levels of confidence

Today I want to dicuss fossil fuel such coal  oil and natural gas  the term of fossil fuel refers to the trapped remains of  plants  animals  in sedimentary rock  you see living plants trap energy from the sun by the process of photosynthesis  and they store energy in their chemical compounds  most of that energy release when the plants die and decay  however organic matter is buried before it decays completely   in this way some of solar energy become trapped in the rock  hence the name  fossil fuel  although the amount of organic matter trapped in any growing season is very small  the accumulated remains from millions of years  are considerable because  the accumulation is slow  millions of times slower than the rate at which we now dip up this organic matter and burn it for energy  we must consider fossil fuels as nonrenewable resource # T' d  f: a0 g

Fuel
1 M( K3 ?/ C3 \6 z; f9 wSince we have been discussing alternative fuel lately  I wanted to paas on to you new information I read about a new fuel that’s been in the news a lot lately it call a 21
( m5 R) M+ f, B' V6 Q  P. ^It’s composed of water and a chemical known as naphtha  it seems to be very promising fuel bacause it is much cleaner than the gas we use today  that doesn’e say it den’t pollute it is cleaner a 21 isn’t like some other alternative fuel that require new types of engines  a 21 still works in regular everyday combustion engines  like the ones in cars  with only minor mechanical modifications so changing over wuoldn’t a big deal
8 i1 d8 |: M9 c  q* x/ A4 g; a5 NYou may doubt some of these claim as many researchers have some people fearedthat bacause it contains about 45 percent water it would freeze in the winter but a small amount of antifreeze was added to it  and that seem to have solved the problem

Winds of a tornado are the most voilent and destructive ones on earth many of you who see one know how frightening and powerful they are what’s interesting about them is that  scientists don’t actually know exactllywhy tornado occur 9 Z3 m2 k, G  X% s- d% l9 v! V. Y
We do kown howeve what happens when tornadoes are formed as you remember  a front occurs when cool dry air from the north meets warm humid ais from the south  where these air masses meet a narrow zone of storm clouds develops and thunderstorms and some =times tornadoes occurs
8 G$ t: ~# p7 I4 lHoe is this voilent weather produce  well a mass of warm humid air rise very rapidly  as it rises  more warm air rushes into replace it  this inrushing air also rises  and in some cases especially when there is extreme thermal instability begins to rotate  when this happens the rotating air forms a tornado
: ]0 @& J0 N* c) kEven if you have seen tornado in movies  you know that they demolish building in seconds  this is possible because tornado pass over the house  it sucks up air from around the house  and so the air pressure  outside the house drops rapidly  inside pressure remains the same  so air pressure inside is greater ais pressure outide  the result is t hat  the builing explodes  outward * M( ^' A. N+ N
Next well talk a bit about how new thenological developments are being used to try to predict tornadoes

Moving away from news paper  let’s now   focus on magazine  the first magazine was a little periodical call review  and it  was started in London in    1704   it looked a lot like the newspaper    but in term of content   it was much different  the news was concerned with news event  but the review focus on domestic issues of the day  and as well as the policy of the government   H2 M; X/ D3 @
Now  in England at the time  people could still be thrown in the jail for publishing the articles that were critical  of king   and that was what happen to d  he was out spoken  founder of review  do  actually wrote the first issue of the review from prison   you see  he had been  arrested  because his writing criticize the policy church of England  which was hated by the king  and  after his release  he continute to produce   review   and magazine start to appear on a more frequent schedule  more r  about three times a week   it dones t   take long for other magazine   just start  popping   up  in 1709  a magazine call tlaler  bagan publication

Well  in answear your question  several woman  actively  participatate  in civil war   the one that comes immediately   to mind is  walker   she is inpormtant  cause  she is only woman  ever  to be awarded  the congressional medal of honor  as you know this  medal was given to  people who had  served the united states   with exceptional bravery
3 m" f5 s2 p! d) j/ x In addition  she was the only female physician in neither of two armies that fought in that war
) G8 Z* g* _1 O6 U5 J2 `4 q8 bEven though she has two medical degree  many officer made her life difficult  because they did’t believe woman should be a doctor  however she refused to back down and leave the army   in fact she risked her life several times during and even captured at one points and she was soon released    ) c3 f5 S5 ]' k2 e$ n2 f
In fact  she was arreasted several time for wearing pants  and although  congress eventually tries to take her medal way   she refused  to give it back and continued    to wear whatever she want  she died 1909  …! s$ U  ^( V+ Q$ v3 ^
