Can advertising tell you a lot about a country?
Since the television was invented, the TV shows have been diversified. With the prosperity of various programs on television, advertising came into being and has been playing a more and more important role in people’s daily life. From advertisements it is true that we can get information not only about products themselves, but more or less the culture and problems of a country as well.
First, advertising can tell us something about the culture of a country. Different countries definitely have different perspective towards appreciation on ads. Through the way in which advertisers usually design, we can conclude the audience’s taste of art, melody and even the preference of certain entertainers, all of these are contained in the range of culture. So in some sense, advertising can reflect one country’s particular culture. For instance, an ad on wine starts with a bowl of golden grain can probably show audience the idea that the wine is healthy and pure enough. This kind of feeling can be true only in china rather than in western countries. That is partly because China has always been a large agricultural country throughout its whole history over 5000 years. The bowl of golden grain may make no sense in western countries, since few people know what they are used for. From the screen of the advertisement and the color advertisers use, we can find some special symbols of one country’s culture.
Another important thing the advertisements can tell us is some serious problems the country confront. Advertisers tend to say “with our products (service), something is no longer a problem.” And something can refer to , say, the health of smokers, the shortage of housing and the inefficiency of manufacturing. From such claims can we get a rudimentary recognition about how many people in this country are heavy smokers, how many people are homeless and how developed the average factories of this country are. Examples like that can be numerous. So if we take a deep consideration on the advertising, we really can know a lot about this country.
