In acient times, many people believed the earth was a flat disk(disc). Well over 2000 years ago the acient Greek philosophers were able to put forward two group(good) of arguments proving it was not. Direct observations of heavenly bodies was the basis of both these arguments. First, the Greek knew during the decrease(eclipse) of the moon, the earth was between the sun and the moon, and they saw that during these eclipse ,The earth’s shadow on the moon was always round. They realized this can be true only if the earth was circle(spherical). If the earth was flat disc, then it’s shadow during eclipse would not a perfect circle, it would be stratch(stretched) out into a long ellipse. The second argument was based on what Greeks during the travels, they noticed the north star or Polaris, appeared lower in sky when they travel south. in the more northerly regions the north star appeared to them to be much higher in the sky. By the way, it was also from this defference in apprent position of the north star. that the Greels first caculated the approximate distance around the circumference of the earth. A figur recorded in acient documents says 400000 stadium, that’s the plural of the world stadium. Today, it is not only(know) exactly what length when stadium represents. But let say it was about 200meters, the length of many athletic stadiums. This would make the Greek’s estimate about twice of figur accepted today, a very good estimate for those writing so long before even the first telescope was invented.

Did you ever wonder why it is that most people are programed to sleep at night instead of during the day. If there’s something about the cycle of light and dark that’s telling us when to sleep, then shouldn’t sleep cycle of a blind person be different? As it turns out, many blind people, people with no visiual(visual) perception of light at all, do have the same sleep cycle as sighted people. So, now you are wondering, how can this happen? The answer is: hormones. One hormones in particular is called melatonin. In sighted people the level of melatonin goes up at night or when it is dark, and goes down in the day or when it is light. It is believed it’s presence of this hormone in blood that gives us the urge to sleep. If increase in melatonin level programs sighted people to sleep at night, then what about blind people? A research named DR, tells about an interesting experiment. He tries to shining a bright light into the eyes of some the blind people. When he did this, he noticed that the level of melatonin in the blood of these subjects went down, just as it would do for sighted people. Some how, the eyes of these subjects even though they were damaged and had no visual preception of light, could tell the brain when there are more or less light. Now this doesn’t work for all blind people, in fact most of subjects had no hormonal at all. Further research maybe able to explain this sensitivity to light in turns(terms) of the type of brightness(blindness) of the subjects

1 ^* N) I# C$ u; h# _# bSo, you see, physical illness can have psychological courses. Now, we just have time to introduce another interesting example of interaction between the mind and the body, placebos. Placebos, maybe you have heard them called sugar pills, are harmness sympetance(substances), not always sugar, that are used rountinely on groups of sick people experiments. These experiments test the effectiveness of new drugs, one group is given the new drug, the other group is given a plcaebo and without(the results are) measured. As you might guess, some of the people who receive the new drugs get better, suprisingly however, some of the palcedo group also get better. Why? Well. It is an interesting question, one which doctors cant quiet(quite) answer. Some of group may have gotten better on their own, without any treatment at all, but research show the very act of taking medication that you think will make you better , often does makes you feel better. Have you ever taken aspirin (active in sole)and felt better in five minuters? Asprin doesn’t work that fast, does it? Bascially, if you believe you will get better, sometimes you do. The history of how doctors and healers to ues the mind body connection to cure people is long and interesting. But I see that its time to close(chose), so I will to cover this in the next class, you will have to hold your questions on this topic to them(till then….). Before you go, I have some handouts for you, consuming(concerning) the midterm exam next week.

Before we start our first lab, I’d like to tell you a little bit about the work book we will be using. The first thing I’d like to point out is that the book contains a very large ammount(amount) of materials far more than you could handle in a single semester. What you are supposed to do is choose the experiments and acticities that you want to do, within a certain framworks, of course . part of my job is to help you to make your choices. Next I’d like to mention that in each work book chapter there are usually two subsections, the first is called experiments and the second is called activities. In the experiment section the work book gives full (followem) instructions for all the experiments, including alternate prece(procedures), choose theprocedures you wish there’s plenty of equipment available. In the activities section, you will find sugggertions for projects that you can do on your own time. You will see there are usually no detailed instuctions for the acticities, you are suppose to do it in your own way. If there are no questions, let’s turun to chapter noe now.% Z: P* D6 Z2 p

The basic idea is that insects can not just to temperatures much above normal. In laboratory experiments, cockroaches and termites can not survival much more than a quarter of an hour at 125 degrees or about 50 degrees centigrade. The new method involves covering a house with a huge tent, and filling it with air he did(heated) to around 65 degrees centigrade. Hot air is forced in with fans and the tent keeps the heat inside the house. Since termites try to escape by hiding in wooden

But when it is all over, the all insects are dead, there are no toxic residues to endanger humans or pets, and no funny smells. Scientist claim that there is no danger of fire, either, since very few house or material will born at 65 degrees centigrade. $ t+ D: A4 L8 UTo us, the environment in which fish dwell often seems dark, clod, mysterious, but they are advantages to live in water, and they have played an important role in making fish what they are. One is that water is not subject to sudden tempature(tempearture) changes, therefore they makes an excellent habitat for a cold blooded animal. Another advantage is the water’s ability to easily support body weight. Plotonza(Protoplasm) has approximately the same density as water, so a fish in water is almost weightless. This weightless in turn means two things. One, the fish can get along with a light weight and simple bone structure. And two, limitations to a fish’s size is practiculary(practiculary) removed, yet there is one basic difficulty to live in water, the fact that is imcompressable(incompressible). For a fish to move through water, it must actually sharp(shove) it aside. Most can do this by weggling(wiggling) back and forth in snakelike motion. The fish pushes water aside by the forward motion of its head and with curve of its body and its flexible tail. Next, the water flows back along the fish’s narrowing sides closing in at the tail, and helping fish prepare(propel) itself forward, The fact that water imcopressible(incompressible) has literiterly(literally) shaped the development of fish. A flat and angle(angular) shape can be moved through water only with difficulty. And for this reason fish have a basic shape that is beautifully adapted deal with activity(peculiarity).

We just seem two compeperoly(contemporary) large birds that cannot fly, the emu and ostrich. Over here is an interesting specimen from the past, this staff(stuffed) animal is not the giant penguin it appears to be, but an oak. This particular kind of oak(auk) is very rare, only 78 skins are non(known) to exist, and most are not persevered(preserved) as well as this one. The great auk as you can see was rather very large bird and can not fly either. However, the evidence suggest that the oak was an excellent swimmer and diver. Unfortunately those ability did not protect them from being easy pretator(prey) or hungry sellers(sailors) who yeas ago sailed the very cold and often icy waters of Green land, Iceland and Scotland. In fact, records indicate that auk was rather testly(testy) and the eggs and feathers useful as well. Still it is not clear what other factors led to the big bird’s to mise(demise) around 1884,
- a6 n" ^1 e8 n6 P" L5 i6 a' ]The last time anyone reported seeing one. Of course, we believe it is important to take extra preserve(precaution) to preserve the remaining the great auk skin. After all, these specimens should prove invaluable for future scientific research. does anyone have any question before we move on to next exhibit?
