As doctor mentioned, we are trying to recurite(recruit) volunteers for the mountain. But before I get into the details of the volunteer program, I’d just like to tell you a little about what we do there. One of our main job is to keep datailed records of the migration patterns of repiders(raptors). For those of you do not know, raptors are birds of prey, like hooks(hawks) or eagles. Between Auguest and December, we see arount 20 different species migrating from Canada and England, about 200000birds. Part of what attracts them to Hook Muntain is the location on the east rage(ridge) of mountains. What happens is that some(sun) warms ridge in such a way that air currents are formed. The birds just sort of slide(glide) along on the air so use up very little energy. As volunteers you will be helping as accurate consume directors(counts of the raptors). And drop in number could mean something gone wrong in the environment, because pestsides(pesticides) or disease, even hunting. We just had a scare with winged hook, their numbers have dropped drasatically over the last ten years. It was suggested that birds may have chance(changed) their migratory root(route), so far eleven days we have 500 volunteers stationed every five miles to oserve and count. And sure enough, they discover that instead of hooking the as they always done. The broad wind were cutting a over river. Needless to say, We are great . ! n4 W# X+ S% e) j

, j7 D3 L0 m4 X6 W/ {Continuing our survey in 19th, let is take a look now at Harriet Beecher Stowe. Now Stowe is best know for her novel as the Uncle Tom’s Cambine(cabin), a book details the harshness of plantation life in the south. The book was extremely popular in United States as well as in other countries. Ironically thought, for all the attention given to Uncle Cambine it is far from her best work. She did write one other novel about life in the south. But much of her best work is nothing to do with south at all. In fact, the best writing is about vilige life in the New England states in the 19th. In according(recording)to the customs of viliges she wrote about, Stowe claimed that her purposes was to reflect the imagines as realistically as possible. She usually succeeded, for her settings were often described actually(accurately) and in datail. In this sense, She was an important forerunner to the realistic movement became popular later in 19th. She was one of the first writter use local dialect for her characters when they spoke. And she did this for thirty years before Mark Twain popularized of use dialects. It makes seem(sense) that would write about England life, since she was born in. As a young woman there, she worked as a teacher. The teaching job heaped head(lead) to her first poplarished(pulished) work, a geography book for children. Later when she was married, her writing helped her support her family fianically, through out her life she wrote poems, travel books, biographical sketches and childre’s books, as well as novels through dooms(for adults).

Ok,located at the research centre in Iowa is a 5000 galen(gallon)vat of water. And inside the tank, is underwater treatment(treadmill) designed by Newman, an aerospace engineer. For four years,
& U. O+ c( A% d0 `( k6 k& JNewman observed scuba divers as they simulated walking on the moon and on the mars on her underwater moving belt. She wanted to discover how the gravity of the monn and of mars would affect human movements. To do this, Newman attached weights to the divers and then lowered them into the tank and onto the treadmill. These weight were carefully adjusted so the divers could experience underwater the gravity of the moon and mars as they walk on the treadmill. Man concluded that Walking on mars will probabley be easier than walking on the moon. The moon has less gravity than mars does, so at lunar gravity, the divers struggled to keep their balance and walked awkwardly. But at Martian gravity, the divers had great attraction(traction) and stibility(stability)and could easily adjust to a pace of 1.5miles per hour. As Newman gradually increased the speed of the treadmill, divers took longer, graceful strides untill they comfortably settled into an even quicker pace. Also noted the gravity the diver need less oxygen. The data collected will help in the future design of space suits. Compared to lunar space suits, suits will require smaller air tanks, and to allow free movement, the elbow and knee areas will also of the space suits also be offered.(altered).

* e, F5 F6 x) KIt is great to see so many of you interesed in this series on surival of out space. Please excuse the cameras, we will been a video tap for a local TV stations. Tonight I am going to talk about the basic aspect of survival, the space suit. When most of you imagie an astronaunt(astronaut), that is probably the first thing comes to mind, right? Well, without space suits, it would not be possible for us to survial(survive) in space. For example, outer space is vaque(vacuum), without gravity or air presssure, without protection the body will expore(explode). What is more, we’d cook in the sun and frezze in the shade with the tempearture ranging from a toasty 300 degrees above to a cool 300 below zero Fahrenheit. The space suit that developed is truly a marvel, there is a photo enlargement here is a life-size image of an actual space suit one(worn) by astront on the last space shuttle mission. This part, is tool(torso), it is made of 7 extremely durable layers. This thick 0 d  W$ O% R5 w( O; ^) V* h

- @5 C9 \' `; \  A8 IMost people think of astronauers(astronomers) as people who spend their time in cold observeatories peering through telescope every night. In fact, a typical astronaut spend most of his of her time anaylizing(analyzing) data, and may only be at the telescope a few weeks of the year. Some work on purely theorical(theroetical) problems and never use telescope at all. You might not know how rarely images are viewed directly through telescopes, the most common way to observe the skies is to photograph them. The process is simple, first a photographic is coated with a light senstive of material. The plate is position so that the image received by telescope is recorded on it. Then the imagine can be developed, enlarged, populished, so that many people can study it. Because most astronuat objects are very romote(remote) the light we received from them is rather feeble. But by using a telescope as a camera, long time exploure(exposures) can be made. In this way, objects can be photographed are 100 times too faint by just looking throughs telescope.0 n: H, _8 F, D; B+ k: T5 W

I am sure you realize your research papers are during(due) in six weeks, I have looked your proposed topics and made comments about them. The most frequent problem was proposing too broad topic, remember this is only 15 pages paper. As I return your topic papers, I would like to look over the schedule which sketches out what we will do during next 2 weeks. Today is Monday, by Friday I want you primliary(preliminary) outline, please be sure to corporate(incorporate) the suggestions that I have made in your outlines. Next week I will have a conference with each of you, I will posted schedule on my office door. Sign your name to indicate the time you are available for the appointment, in the conference we will discuss your primarily(preliminary outline. Then you can make the necessary revisions and hand in the outline which is in due two weeks from today. Use the outline in text book, and remember no more than two pages long. Be sure to start with these a thesis statement, that is the precise statement of the point you intend to prove. And include a conclusion, have you got all that? Your two pages preliminary outline during the end of this week, and finnal outline due after your conferences, follow the textbook style and include physical statement and a conclusion.

9 J: E" N: N3 oWe have probably all wondered how a new word gets into the dictionary, take the word doofus, for # s$ w# m  Q/ Z' p  m9 O2 [
example, spelled d o o f u s, meaning stupid or incompatible(incompetent) person. This word which has been around since late 1960 ‘s in a slight(slang) sense, made it into Dictionary only in 1993. Why did it take so long? Well, first of all, dictionary edited(editiors) like to wait at least 3 years to be sure a word is going to last, especially a sign(slang) word. They do not want to put in a word prematurely and then have to take it out in next edition. But even for words that are not slang getting into the dictionary is not easy. New words have to pass a lot of editiery(editorial) tests, including how difficult or easy they are to look up. There is also a limit to how thick a dictionary can be or how small its type can get before people feel they do not want to use it. Some words have to come out before others can come in. The dictionary reacts(adds) 100000 words to every edition but it takes out only a few hundred, so the choice have to be made very carefully.

Only human these sounds represent objects and events, keep in mind that most animals can only repeart their limited again and again, but human can say things that have never been said before. Today I want focus on human language, how it developed. I dare you will be surprised when I say the evolutionary of language is slow and boried.
