U.S. News produces two rankings of medical schools. All 125 accredited medical schools in the United States are considered for the overall ranking. These 125 schools plus the 19 schools of osteopathic medicine are considered for the primary-care ranking. The rankings use measures of academic quality and weights as described below. Research activity is a measure used only in the overall rankings; the percentage of students entering internal medicine, family practice, and pediatrics is a measure used only in the primary-care rankings. An overview of our methodology appears on Page 59.

Reputation (40 percent): Academic reputation was measured through two kinds of surveys conducted by U.S. News in the fall of 1999. In the first, medical school deans and senior faculty were asked to rate each school's overall academic quality, as well as the quality of its primary-care program, on a scale of "marginal" (1) to "distinguished" (5). The response rate was 51 percent for medical schools and 68 percent for osteopathic schools. A school's average score accounts for 20 percent of its overall rank and 25 percent of its primary-care rank. In the second survey, sent to residency program directors, respondents were asked to select either the 25 best medical schools or the 25 best primary-care schools. Forty-five percent responded to the best medical schools survey, 31 percent to the primary-care survey. Their opinions account for 20 percent of a school's overall rank and 15 percent of its primary-care rank, respectively.
2 J; i& r! j8 ], e3 A; R: ?
Research activity (30 percent of overall rank): This indicator is measured as the total dollar amount of National Institutes of Health research grants awarded to the medical school and its affiliated hospitals, averaged for 1998 and 1999.
2 l9 j" n. B W X. \4 A* [+ b# zPrimary-care rate (30 percent of primary-care rank): The percentage of M.D.'s from the school entering primary-care residencies, averaged over 1997, 1998, and 1999.

Student selectivity (20 percent of overall rank, 15 percent for primary care): This indicator consists of three components, which describe the class entering in fall 1999: mean composite Medical College Admission Test score (65 percent of this measure), mean undergraduate grade-point average (30 percent), and the proportion of applicants accepted into the program (5 percent).
" G' h& D+ E3 a# P1 L& M) bFaculty resources (10 percent of overall rank, 15 percent for primary care): This indicator is the ratio of full-time science and clinical faculty to full-time students in 1999.
. s8 P; X8 w" U: U1 [Overall rank: To obtain its overall score, the school's score on each indicator was first standardized. The standardized scores of each indicator were weighted, totaled, and rescaled so that the top-scoring school received a 100 and other schools received a percentage of the top school's score.
5 _" P S3 R3 R( J6 g7 V& KSpecialty rankings: To rank specialties, U.S. News asked medical school deans and senior faculty to identify up to 10 schools offering the best programs in each specialty area. The 10 schools receiving the highest number of nominations appear in the tables. Each school verified its specialty offerings.
