Five years has gone, however, the spirit of university emphasized by Wilhelm Von Humboldt always occurs to me, making me contemplate how people can make it better to communicate with each other and get well-educated. That’s why I decided to choose communication science (kommunikationswissenschaft) as my study field, to pursue in communication research, and to be a good teacher in the university.
I still remember how excitement I was and that courage rushed into my mind when I read these sentences in a book for the first time. At that time, I was just a freshman in the university. In the latter five years, I’ve learnt a lot about theories of journalism and communication and managed to put all of them into practice. Through communicating with others, I found out some skills to how to open the sluices and get on well with others.
Majored in Journalism, I used to be a journalist of “News Weekly” in Renmin University of China (RUC). In the interviews, I wondered why different ways to talk resulted in different reactions. Not until did I meet the Uncertainty Reduction Theory (Berger and Calabrese), Social Exchange Theory (Thibaut and Kelley) etc., I realized that there were certain rules and techniques in personal communication. Furthermore, I wrote a paper using conversation analysis to explain what kind of skills journalists took in order to display neutrality and to conduct the interviews in television news interviews. Wonder and curiosity led me to seek the answer and the truth, and what kind of happiness to discover new things it is! It’s just like a beam of sunlight in the dark road of scientific exploring, bringing hope and courage to the explorer.
Sometimes, it seems that not everything goes well, patience is needed. Take my survey on “Blog-Threat to the Traditional Media?” for example. Entering into the media to issue questionnaires appeared quite difficult for me. It’s my first time to design questionnaires and to analysis the enormous amount of statistics which I’ve never seen before. Numerous mistakes were made and were corrected, and every mistake told me that there were countless adversities on the way to truth. Even if you have tried your best, the result is not always as you desire. A fall into a pit, a gain in your wit. I’ve learnt a lot from the survey, and my teachers and friends, whose suggestions told me how to make it better, helped me a lot. Besides, my family gave me courage to come through all the difficulties. Thanks to their help, the survey won the second prize of the “Cup of Challenge” Student Prize Paper Competition. Just as Von Humboldt said, Wissenschaft is part of reaching an individual's intellectual and moral. In the process of research, I’m getting more patient，firm and persistent. Furthermore, I realize that the greatest virtue is to help and to share. Helping gives hope to people in difficulties, while sharing with my teachers, friends and family, whom are the wealth in my life, brings me happiness
As Confucius, the greatest philosopher and educator of ancient China, said over 2000 years ago, “studying without any friend makes ignorance.” More friends I have to share happiness with and to discuss with, more inspiration it brings to me. Life is too short to practise everything while friends with totally different experience will tell you all kinds of interesting stories. As a result, I’ll learn a lot from that. For example, my friend Long Xiaolan told me she was writing Blog, I didn’t know what was Blog at that moment. So I clicked into Google.com to find out that Blog was a special dairy, and it was considered as threaten to the traditional media by some experts. Wondering came into my mind – why? Even the discussion on the name of a piece of classical music made me take the first step to learn German, since most of our disks are from DG( Deutsche Grammophon- Gesellschaft ) and signed in German. I was so crazy at speaking in the same language with J. S. Bach, whose music make me find a wonderful land filled with beauty of melody.
All I have seen what teachers did for the students makes me decide to be a good teacher. I’m so lucky to meet so many good teachers in my life time. Every effort by my teachers to help students makes me be deeply touched and appreciate. My teacher in Media Management, a sixty-eight-year-old gentleman, talked with us on how to make our case studies better, and told me that perfect personality of students should be included in the spirit of university. Research makes my life fantastic, and teaching makes all I’ve learned with more value – teacher is the engineer of human soul. That’s why I want to be a university teacher in the future-to perfect the research, to perfect my personality, to perfect students’ cultivation.
Parents are the lighthouse in a child’s life. My family has enormous influence on me. My childhood almost companied with disease. I still remember the worst time when my platelet decreased to a dangerous level for the fever. Treat such as injection made me suffer a lot. My parents, who companied with me, helped me and encouraged me to beat the disease, gives me a sense of happiness and appreciation. They said, every day was the given from the god, enjoyed the suffering that is unable to avoid. So I persisted in fighting with difficulties and appreciated the wonderful sunlight everyday. Now, they tell me,” just chase after your dream, and tell people the happiness of life!”
My dream is doing research on what I am interested in communication science. I hope I can make my dream come true in Germany, which is the homeland of classical music, the pioneer of media studies and communication science, and I plan to return to China after the completion of my graduate studies to teach at one of the larger Chinese universities.
Because we know few about the accomplishment of communication science and media studies in Germany .Moreover, there is not any monograph about the history of journalism in Germany in Chinese. Hence, I hope I will bring back what I will have learned, devoting all my life to the communication between Germany and China, and the academic exchange between these two countries. I hope I can play a pioneering role to the development of this field.
